Johann Jungwirth

Volkswagen AG, Germany: CDO

Johann Jungwirth (43) has been Chief Digital Officer (CDO) at Volkswagen Inc. since November, 2015, and is responsible for the digital transformation of the Volkswagen Group. Johann reports directly to the CEO of Volkswagen Inc., Matthias Müller.

 

Before that he was with Apple, where he served for over one year as Director in the development of Mac computer systems and in Apple’s Special Projects Group in Cupertino, California (USA). There, he was responsible for innovation in technology, design, and product development, as well as for recruiting, developing, and managing a multicultural R&D team.

 

From 2009 to 2014, Johann was President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, and thus head of its research and development center in Sunnyvale (with subsidiary locations). In this role, Johann steered his team in R&D for autonomous driving, powertrain- and electrical-traction, technology- and vehicle-development, as well as the development of its Business Innovation, Future Studies, and User Interaction Design programs.

 

Johann was born on May 3, 1973 in Reußmarkt, Germany. He graduated with a BA in Electrical Engineering at Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Stuttgart. Alongside his professional work, he also participated in the International Motor Vehicle Program of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA) and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School (Philadelphia, USA). Johann is married and has three children.
