Dr. Randal Koene

Kernel: Chief of Neuroscience & Systems Strategy

Dr. Randal Koene is VP of computational neuroscience and systems strategy at Kernel LLC, the first commercial endeavor in the space of true neural interfacing between brain and machine for both clinical and non-clinical applications.

Before the company was launched in April 2016, Dr. Koene spent two years working with Bryan Johnson, the company's founder, investor and CEO, to find out how to get started in this space in a way that would not lead to the traditional high risk slow time lines of medtech companies.

Even earlier, he spent nearly a decade advocating the importance of the the project, and seeking ways to accelerate the development of neural interfaces, neural prostheses, and brain emulation.

For this purpose, Koene founded and led the non-profit organization carboncopies.org, which still operates today as a hub for roadmapping, and project generation in both commercial and academic partnerships. Koene is also the consulting Science Director of the 2045 Initiative.

Dr. Koene is the son of a Dutch particle physicist and German artist. He studied physics and information theory in the Netherlands, then did a neuroscience Ph.D. about human memory systems in Montreal, Canada, followed by academic positions at Boston University, and two years as head of the department of neuroengineering at a science and engineering company, Tecnalia, in Spain.
